Course Overview: This course is geared toward learning and developing a basic masonry skill set. It will begin each day with a small amount of classroom time, but most of the day will be spent learning masonry skills and building various projects. Why Sweeps Attend: Sweeps are routinely in contact with deteriorated chimney tops and other masonry structures during daily work appointments. There are a great number of potential masonry repair jobs available to be done. Most masonry contractors are not interested in such small projects. This opens the door to adding a very profitable service to a sweep company, with an almost limitless supply of potential masonry repair projects available. There is usually limited competition for this type of work. Course Overview: This is an intensive 5-day class combining a short period of classroom theory each morning, and hands-on projects relating to the theory lessons. The course is geared to provide the student with basic knowledge and the skills necessary to perform a variety of chimney-related masonry tasks that will be beneficial and profitable for a sweeping company. There will be ample one-on-one time with the instructors to allow everyone to proceed as their progress allows. Course Overview: The week begins with repairing existing fireboxes and smoke chambers. However, the bulk of the class will be building a firebox and smoke chamber, layout and building a brick face with an arched opening, and a hearth extension. Participants will be building the firebrick PriorFire. This is a very intensive advanced class that will help you take your skills to a higher level. Course Overview: Many of the existing stock of factory built fireplaces are in need of replacement. This provides a profitable opportunity for many companies. This class gives students the opportunity to both learn in the classroom and practice their skills hands on at the CSIA Center for Education, Research & Training (CERT). We utilize the Prior Structure, which contains a factory built fireplace with every defect we could think to sharpen your inspection skills. You will have the hands-on experience of removing an old fireplace and replacing it with a new unit while utilizing various finish techniques. Course Overview: Working in the chimney and hearth industry you will have to understand a wide range of skills to become a successful business. One of those skills is carpentry. CSIA is hosting a hands-on basic carpentry workshop where we will go through proper terminology, minor repairs on things like drywall, installing vinyl siding, or how to frame something properly such as factory-built fireplaces, or wall pass-throughs. This can all be done by proper instruction and the use of the correct tools. Course Overview: CSIA CEUs Awarded: 10-T, 2-C&S (12 CEUs Total) When installing wood burning appliances, you need to know what chimney is required. CSIA is now offering a hands-on class that will help you understand how a factory-built chimney is installed. We will cover new installations, including all the components needed for wall pass-through and ceiling applications. This course is scheduled with the Carpentry Chase & Cricket class so you can get the full experience from start to finish on installing factory-built chimneys, chasing them in, including constructing the cricket. While the CCC class is not a prerequisite, you can make the most of your travel expenses by joining us for this informative class on installing factory-built chimneys (and earn more CEUs!). Course Overview: In this hands-on class we delve into the components and operating principles of gas hearth appliances. There will be demonstrations of various systems at work. Course Overview: This course will feature a combination of classroom and hands-on activities. The hands-on learning will go into detail on installing liners for fireplaces, freestanding appliances, and inserts. Learn what you should and should not do while installing liners to these appliances based on the manufacturer's installation instructions, and codes and standards. Course Overview: Understanding the needs of customers and staff can be very challenging. CSIA is offering a Customer Service course that will jumpstart any representative and help them better understand how to answer questions both internally and externally. This course is designed to improve communication, learn the importance of conflict resolution, and further their knowledge of fireplaces and appliances to provide better service within the chimney and hearth industry. There will be a combination of lecture presentations, hands-on activities, and role-playing scenarios. Course Overview: In this class, we will explore the science of why flue gases exit chimneys. We will cover things like system design, house issues that affect our products negatively, external factors, and solutions to venting problems. The goal of this class is to explain the relationship between the pressures inside a chimney which create “Draft and Flow” and how they are affected by the pressures inside the house and the outside atmosphere. Course Overview: In this course, we will be going through methods to properly size liners for solid-fuel fireplaces, gas appliances, and oil-burning appliances. During this class we will look at firebox ratios and how they determine the correct size liner. We will go over different codes that apply to relining gas and oil appliances by themselves and manifolded together.
