Everything You Need to Know About Renewing Your CSIA- Certified Chimney Specialist® Credential

Your CSIA-Certified Chimney Specialist® credential sets you apart. Here’s everything you need to know around keeping your credential current, including when and how to renew it. Let’s dive right in.

When do you need to renew your Certified Chimney Specialist® credential?

You’ll need to renew your credential every three years.

How do you renew it?

The CSIA-Certified Chimney Specialist® credential must be renewed through continued education. You’ll need to earn a minimum of 48 CEUs during the three-year credential cycle. Here are the categories accepted CEUs need to fall into and how many you need per category:

Technical | 12 CEUs
Codes & Standards | 8 CEUs
Communication & Liability |6 CEUs
Health & Safety |6 CEUs
Elective/Additional in Any Category (including Business*) | 16 CEUs

Total = 48 CEUs

*Business CEUs may not be used to meet minimum category requirements in Technical, Codes & Standards, Communication & Liability, or Health & Safety. Business falls under the ‘Elective’ category.

Do CEUs need to be submitted to CSIA to count towards credential renewal?

We work with instructors to get CEU records, so as long as the courses and trainings you’re taking are approved by CSIA for CEUs, you will not need to submit CEUs to us. We will have all approved CEUs tied to your ID number and stored in our system. We do, however, still recommend that you keep track of your CEUs in case there’s ever a discrepancy.

If you’re taking a course or training that isn’t currently CSIA-approved for CEUs and you’d like to earn CEUs for it, you will need to submit it to us at office@csia.org.

How much does credential renewal with CEUs cost?

The renewal with CEU fee is $289.

What if you don’t have 48 CEUs when it’s time to renew?

If you don’t accumulate the required 48 CEUs by the time your credential is up for renewal, you will lose your Certified Chimney Specialist® credential.

How do you reinstate your credential?

To reinstate a lapsed credential, you will need to order and pass the CSIA certification exam and pay the $199 application fee. You will only be allowed to reinstate a lapsed certification one time. Any lapse after that and you will lose the CSIA-Certified Chimney Specialist® certification until you’re eligible to apply again.

Is there a grace period for renewal?

We’ll send out reminders when your credential is up for renewal, so it doesn’t slip your mind. We also offer a 30-day grace period for renewal, although you cannot accrue CEUs after your credential has expired.

Can CEUs over the required 48 be rolled over into the next three-year period?

CEUs do not carry over after credential renewal, so once you renew your certification, you’ll start fresh with 0 CEUs.
