Chimney Sweeping Logs: Your Questions Answered
We get a lot of questions about chimney sweeping logs and creosote logs, like:
- Do chimney sweeping logs really work?
- How do chimney cleaning logs work?
- If you use a creosote log, do you still need a chimney sweep?
Well, we’ve got answers! Let’s dive in.
#1 Do chimney sweeping logs really work?
If you’re expecting a chimney sweeping log to clean your chimney, the answer is no, they don’t work. They do something, but they don’t do everything.
Which brings us to our next question…
#2 How do chimney cleaning logs/creosote logs work?
Chimney cleaning logs or creosote logs work by chemically changing creosote in the fireplace flue. And while these logs can make creosote flake off, they don’t eliminate creosote and soot. All they do is make it easier for a chimney sweep to get in there and clean everything out.
Which brings us to our last question…
#3 If you use a creosote log, do you still need a chimney sweep?
Because creosote logs don’t actually eliminate creosote and soot or remove them from the chimney system, you’ll still need to schedule routine chimney cleanings with a professional – even if you use creosote logs.
A chimney sweep will use brushes, rods, and HEPA vacuums to remove soot and creosote from your chimney flue and fireplace so that your chimney is left clean and ready for continued use.
But the chimney cleaning isn’t the only perk of hiring a CSIA-Certified Chimney Sweep®. You also get expert eyes on your system to check for any damage, leaks, or other potential issues – which could save you big money in the long run and protect you against chimney fires and other hazards.
So, follow the NFPA 211 Standard and schedule annual inspections and chimney cleanings as needed. It’s well worth the investment. You can find a qualified chimney professional in your area right here.
