Get Ready for Chimney Safety Week!

National Chimney Safety Week is a week we get pretty fired up about every year. Why? It’s a week designed to educate homeowners on the inherent dangers of fireplaces and provide them with tips on how to reduce their risks of suffering a chimney fire or carbon monoxide-related health emergency.

Why? Because we want every family to be able to enjoy a safer, warmer home.

It starts with understanding the facts:

  • According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC), an average of 17,600 chimney fires occurred annually in the U.S. between 2015 and 2017. And although this represents a significant drop from previous years, we still believe there’s room for improvement.
  • The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that all chimneys be inspected annually and cleaned as needed.
  • Having your chimney inspected by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® before lighting your first fire of the season is the #1 way to prevent potential damage to your home and the loss of life that may result from a blocked or damaged chimney.
  • There are more than 2,300 CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps® located across the United States and it’s never been easier to find one near you. To find one, simply head here and enter your area into the search tool.

What’s the Most Dangerous Type of Chimney Fire?

Now, let’s hear from our Director of Education, Russ Dimmitt, on the two types of chimney fires, what causes them, and what makes them so dangerous.
