About Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Instructors can now submit course information to be considered for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from both the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fireplace Institute (NFI) Continuing Education Programs. Upon receiving the application, the committee from each organization will review your program for applicable content and may award CEUs in each group's corresponding categories. You will receive a separate email from each organization.

NFI and CSIA are independent certification agencies that work cooperatively to serve the needs of their industry's professionals. This joint application reflects the similarity of their interests and their shared commitment to ongoing education. Please continue reading for more information on CSIA's Continuing Education Program. NFI's program information can be found by visiting www.nficertified.org.

Applying for CSIA Continuing Education Units
Each course instructor(s) must submit a CEU Application for Course Credit.
  1. Once approved for CEUs, courses do not have to be resubmitted unless:
  •  The length of the course changes.
  • The content of the course changes by more than 30%.

In the past, we required people to resubmit courses every two years.  If the length and the content of the course has not changed there is no reason to submit a new application.

  1. You no longer need to submit a list of locations and dates for courses that will be offered multiple times.  However, we still need the date and the course number on the attendance sheet you turn in after each class.  Also, you no longer need to submit separate applications for online versus live classes.

Please note:
  • Attendees can only receive CEUs for a class one time. If you repeat the same course the system will reject any entries for people who have already been given credit for that class. The system looks at the course number.  If a class is resubmitted due to length change or content change over 30% it is given a new course number.
  • Online courses should consist of a narrated PowerPoint presentation, video and/or a quiz at the end to ensure the attendee viewed the class. The length of the presentation should not include reading materials or clicking through non-narrated slides.
  • When Submitting Webinars for CEUs, please list "webinar" in the title. Webinars must have preregistration and tracking to receive CEUs for the webinar. Please export the attendee list report showing attendance and completion for attendees. Submit to Tammy at tbruner@csia.org. No individual certificates will be accepted for webinars.
  • When filling out the attendance sheets, please instruct attendees to write legibly and indicate if they are NFI or CSIA certified.  If the NFI or CSIA box is left blank, we do not check to see if they are certified unless there is a check mark, a question mark or something that indicates they are certified but don’t know their ID number.
  • HPBEF and NCSG staff will submit the application for courses that will be presented at HPBExpo and the NCSG Convention. However, those submissions are for that single event since the application is not sent to their respective committees for review.  If an instructor wants to teach the same course at other events, he or she needs to fill out a full application.

By submitting a course to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) for CEU approval, you acknowledge and agree that:

  • You are solely responsible for the administration of the course and for all content provided or communicated to participants.  You represent and warrant that all content will be original, accurate, complete, and reliable, and all content will comply with applicable laws, rules, regulations and industry standards.
  • You will not reference CSIA or any trademarks, service marks, or certification marks owned by CSIA except to indicate that the course is eligible for Certified Chimney Sweep® CEU credits.
  • You will indemnify, hold harmless, and (if CSIA elects) defend CSIA and its directors, officers, employees, representatives, and agents from and against any and all claims, actions, judgments, demands, proceedings, liabilities, losses, costs and expenses (including, without limitation, attorney’s fees) arising out of or relating to the course and all content provided or communicated to participants.
APPLY FOR CEUs
Curriculum Assessment
The CSIA Certification Renewal Committee will review the presented material and will be responsible for approving, rejecting or requesting additional information. The Certification Renewal Committee will be working on five specific areas of focus:
  • Technical
  • Codes & Standards
  • Health & Safety
  • Communication & Liability
  • Electives (including Business)

When preparing materials for CSIA's consideration, please note the following:
  • You MUST submit a course outline. (Outline files must be under 1MB.)
  • All handouts for the course.

Important note about the online application process: Without submitting an outline and/or handouts, there is a strong possibility your course may not be approved for CEUs Application deadline is 30 days prior to course date, or CEUs may not be approved. All applications must be complete. Incomplete applications will not receive CEU Credits.

CEU Applications for Course Credit
To apply online for course credits from both CSIA and NFI, please follow this link or click on the button above.

CSIA CEU Application Approval
When an application has been approved, the instructor(s) will be sent confirmation with a copy of the completed application.

Regional and State Guild Curriculum Review Procedure
Material presented by speakers and class instructors from either regional and state guilds or association programs may be approved for the CSIA Continuing Education Program if the following criteria are met:
  • Presented material meets one or more of the areas of focus.
  • The CSIA Certification Renewal Committee reviews speakers' material.
  • Sponsors/instructors of the classes must meet the same control and attendance procedures recommended by the Certification Renewal Committee and CSIA office staff.

If classes and all related material are submitted prior to the 30-day deadline, CSIA will produce certificates or other material labeled with the dates, CEU credits and category for the credits. CEU candidates are responsible for maintaining a copy and their own records of CEUs obtained.

Renewing the CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep Credential with CEUs
Candidates for certification renewal must earn a minimum of 48 CEUs in the following areas in order to bypass having to take the CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep exam:
  • Technical | 12 CEUs
  • Codes & Standards | 8 CEUs
  • Communication & Liability | 6 CEUs
  • Health & Safety | 6 CEUs
  • Additional in ANY category (including Business) | 16 CEUs
48 TOTAL CEUs
