This weeklong course will cover a host of gas hearth system service and installation topics, including gas hearth appliance standards, combustion air requirements, gas pipe sizing and installation, troubleshooting gas appliances, carbon monoxide testing protocol and fuel conversion procedures. Students will also have the opportunity to become certified installers for several brands of Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing.
Prices start at $1,649 for NCSG members and $1,849 for non-NCSG members.
Jim Brewer and Mike VanBuren bring over 25 years of experience in the chimney service industry to the Installing & Troubleshooting Gas Hearth Appliances course. Brewer holds a master mechanics license in Virginia, and also serves on the NFPA 54 committee.
VanBuren is a professional engineer, and has served as the technical director for HPBA.
Students who complete this course will be able to provide professional recommendations and services to customers with gas hearth appliances and will gain working knowledge to supplement their credentials.

Troubleshooting Operating Appliances
Students will work with live appliances in the CSIA Technology Center lab. You will learn how to troubleshoot gas hearth appliances while in operation. Instructors will help you determine the proper venting system for each appliance, as well as how each appliance should be serviced. Students will also get an objective overview of a variety of gas hearth appliances.
By the end of this course, students will be able to work proficiently with many different types of gas hearth appliances.
Students will do more than just prepare for the NFI Gas Hearth Appliance Exam. They will gain hands-on experience with a variety of gas appliances and installation systems, including:
- Installing a direct vent insert in the field.
- Installing gas logs in a masonry fireplace and in a factory built fireplace.
- Bench testing a variety of appliances.
- Learn troubleshooting procedures in the CSIA Technology Center Lab.
- Become authorized to purchase flexible corrugated stainless steel tubing.
- Thread, join and test black iron and copper pipe for leaks.
Installing and Troubleshooting Gas Hearth Appliances is held exclusively at the CSIA Technology Center in Plainfield, IN, just minutes away from the Indianapolis International Airport.
Lunch on Monday through Friday is included with registration fee. NFI’s Gas Hearth Specialist manual and exam are included with registration fee. Students must supply their own NFPA 54.
